‘What’s your name?’

This is the first of our 52 different occupations that we’ll explore in Spanish this year, and perhaps the keystone of them all!
No matter what type of work you do, the following phrases and vocabulary will serve you well in many situations!

When you enter stores in your area or go online, look for (overhead) signs printed in Spanish, indicating the Customer Service desk

– Servicio al Cliente* or Atención al Cliente*

*Note that in Spanish, cliente means customer or client.

-¿En qué le puedo ayudar? o ¿En qué puedo ayudarle? o ¿Cómo le puedo ayudar? – In what way can I help you? or How can I help you?

Phonetics: ain    k    lay    PWAY   dough    i    you    DARD?
puedo = PWAY dough
ayudar = i you DARD

-Tengo una cita
– I have an appointment

-¿Cómo se llama? – What’s your name?
-Me llamo Jorge – My name is Jorge.

-¿Cuál es su apellido? – What’s your last name? (ah pay YEE dough)
-Mi apellido es Martinez – My last name is Martinez.

Let’s take the start question of:
-¿Cuál es su ____? – What is your_____?
and begin to add more words to the back of it to really expand our customer service questions.

¿Cuál es su nombre? – another way to ask What is your name?
It can be a bit more official or businesslike than ¿Cómo se llama?but not necessarily. It’s used in social settings, too.

¿Cuál es su número de teléfono?  – What’s your phone number?
¿Cuál es su dirección?
– What’s your address?
¿Cuál es su código/zona postal?
– What’s your zip code

Customer Service – Our dialogue may go like this:

Empleado: Buenos días. ¿En qué puedo ayudarle?

¿Cuál es su apellido?

Es Martínez.

Sí, Jorge Martínez.

¿Cuál es su número de teléfono?

Mi número de teléfono es 901-031-0076.

¿y su código postal?

Es 01943.

Empleado: Good morning. How can I help you?
Cliente: Good morning.  I have an appointment at 9:00
What’s your last name?
It’s Martinez.
Cliente: yes
What’s your phone number?
My phone number is 901-531-0076
And your zip code?
It’s 01943

Action steps: Even if this information seems easy for some of you, be sure that you can “speak” it with ease, not just “read” it with ease.
Come back and practice this several times aloud.
Practice asking and answering the questions using your own information and perhaps varying the time of the appointment.

Hasta mañana,
