Today we’ll extend our conversation from yesterday,
and learn how to ask, What’s your name? in Spanish.
Greeting people and exchanging names.
To ask someone their name we’ll say: ¿Cómo se llama?
The literal translation is: How do you call yourself?
We don’t say it like that in English, but it’s important to know in case you are trying to translate this phrase word-for-word. Not everything translates word-for-word. I’d translate ‘¿Cómo se llama’ as: What’s your name?, even though it literally means How do you call yourself?
¿Cómo se llama?
Me llamo Carolina. ¿Y Usted?
Notice the “o” on the back of “Me llamo“.
Remember: Tengo, Quiero and No entiendo?
The “o” means “yo” or I.
Me llamo Carolina translates as: I call myself Carolina, but again, I’d never say it that way in English.
Let’s just translate that as My name is Carolyn (even though it is not a word-for-word translation)
When someone asks you: ¿Cómo se llama? You can respond one of 3 ways:
1. Me llamo Carolina – (I call myself) …
2. Mi nombre es Teresa – My name is…
3. Soy Miguel – I’m or I am
You could just respond: Carolina, but since we are in Spanish class, let’s use the full sentence so we learn the words.
A. Hola, Buenos días. ¿Cómo está?
B. Buenos días. Bien, gracias, ¿y Usted?
A. Muy bien. ¿Cómo se llama?
B. Me llamo Paco. ¿y Usted?
A. Soy José. Mucho gusto.
B. Igualmente
-Mucho gusto or Encantado/a – Nice to meet you
-Igualmente or El gusto es mío – Nice to meet you, too
