Hey, it’s a great day to be here! It’s a Friday so let’s learn how to make plans.
Earlier this week we learned how to tell time and to say what time something takes place.
Yesterday we started our study of the verb “ir” – to go.
Today we’ll take it a little further.

Notes:
1. The verb “ir” is conjugated in the present tense, but it it expresses a future action, something that you are going to do.
2. It is followed by the preposition ‘a‘ 99% of the time. (This is my random percentage to say that it is almost always followed by ‘a’).
3. Notice how it contains the verb ‘to be‘ in the English translation: This can be tricky because our English-speaking minds think of ‘ser‘ or ‘estar‘ in Spanish
Yo voy – I am going
tú vas – you are going
s/he is going, we are going, they are going
4. The ‘nosotros’ form can translate as either: We go…, We are going…, or *Let’s go… – It’s a great way to make an invitation!
Vamos a comer – We are going to eat or Let’s eat.
Vamos a la clase – We go to class or Let’s go to class.
5. You may have heard ‘Vámonos‘ before. This is different from ‘Vamos‘
‘Vámonos‘ comes from the verb ‘irse‘ – to leave, and means “Let’s leave”, as in now. There is an immediacy to the word.
‘Vamos‘ comes from ‘ir‘ which is what we are studying here. It means: We go, We are going or Let’s go. It does not have the same urgency as ‘Vámonos‘.
6. There are 2 ‘formulas‘ with this verb and no matter how long or complex the sentence, you’ll still see the formula.
A. Ir + a + inifintivo (what we studied yesterday).
Yo voy a trabajar mañana a las 7:00am. – I’m going to work tomorrow at 7:00am.
El sábado a las 5:30pm ellos van a llegar con toda su familia para pasar unos días de vacaciones con nosotros.

On Saturday at 5:30pm they are going to arrive with the whole family to spend a few days of vacation with us.
B. Ir + a + un lugar (a ‘lugar‘ is a ‘place‘)
¿Vas a la clase? – Are you going to class?
Sí, yo voy a la clase de español a las 10:30am. – Yes, I’m going to Spanish class at 10:30am.
Ella va al supermercado. – She’s going to the grocery store.
Vamos a las montañas. – Let’s go to the mountains.
7. Contraction
In Spanish there are very few contractions. One does come up here, though.
a + el = al
There is no contraction with a + la, a + los or a + las.
Voy a el parque becomes Voy al parque.
but
Ellos van a la oficina.
8. With the 2 formulas, there are 2 questions:
A. ¿Adónde vas? – Where are you going?
B. ¿Qué vas a hacer? – What are you going to do?

Hola, Martín. ¿Adónde vas? – Hi, Martín. Where are you going?
Voy al parque con unos amigos. – I’m going to the park with some friends.
¿Qué van a hacer? – What are you guys going to do?
Vamos a jugar al fútbol. – We’re going to play soccer.

7. ¿Dónde va a estudiar María?
Ella va a estudiar en un café.
8. ¿Cuándo va a regresar ella?

Voy a comprar huevos y necesitamos más bananas.
10. ¿Vas a escuchar la radio?
Sí, hay un programa que va a empezar muy pronto.
