Is it eavesdropping or studying?
Sometimes in public places it is nearly impossible to NOT hear what other people are saying.
I don’t mean to listen, but sometimes you can’t help but to hear other people’s conversations especially if they are right next to you.
I think it’s easier for me to tune it out in English, but in Spanish, even after 30 years of studying, I still consider myself a student. I like to have opportunities to hear Spanish and try to understand.
Also, I’m blonde so I think that people don’t realize that I speak Spanish.
Here are some lessons in Spanish that I’ve learned while out shopping. I think they’re innocent examples.
By seeing it in action at the same time that you hear it really helps learning. It’s called ‘modeling.’ That’s what parents do for their kids with language.
1. ‘Mira, mamá, mira. Mira, mira.’ – Look, mom look. Look, look.
2. ‘Cárgame, mamá. Cárgame. Estoy cansada.’ – Carry me, mom. Carry me. I’m tired.
3. ‘Pónte los zapatos. ¡Póntelos!’ -Put on your shoes. Put them on!
4. ‘Necesito una libra de jamón.’ – I need a pound of ham.
5. ¿Qué piensas? ¿Cuál es la diferencia entre las dos?’ – What do you think? What’s the difference between the 2?

I found these phrases are very useful.
I’m happy that I had the opportunity to over hear them and to see them in action. It really ingrained it for me and now I can easily use them in my own conversations.
Action steps:
Keep your ears and eyes open. As adult learners we need modeling. Eavesdropping? OR Studying Spanish on the Go?!
