Is there really such thing as a perfect verb in any language?
Yes! and in Spanish…
The perfect verb in Spanish is: hay
The little word “hay” looks like “hay” in English, but that is NOT what it means!
‘Hay’ in Spanish is easy to pronounce: just say the letter ‘i‘ or eye
Hay
Translation: There is… or There are…
Whether you want to say “There is…” or “There are…”, it’s the same word in Spanish.
What makes this verb so perfect is that you don’t have conjugate it! It’s always “hay” (in the present tense)
Hay una pluma en la mesa – There is (There’s) a pen on the table.
Hay 2 botellas de agua en la nevera – There are (There’re) 2 bottles of water in the fridge.
It’s also very easy to turn it into a question. Notice word order in English.
¿Hay una pluma en la mesa? – Is there a pen on the table?
¿Hay 2 botellas de agua en la nevera? – Are there 2 bottles of water in the fridge?
We can also add the word ¿Cuántos/as to our question.
¿Cuántos meses hay en un año? – How many months are in a year?
Hay 12.
¿Cuántas semanas hay en un año?
Hay 52.

Make negative statements to express “There isn’t” or “There aren’t”
No hay una pluma en la mesa. – There isn’t a pen on the table.
No hay agua en la nevera. – There isn’t any water in the fridge.
No hay platos en la mesa. – There aren’t any plates on the table.
No hay muchos empleados en mi compañía. – There aren’t many employees in my company.
Action step: In your journal, begin making simple statements about the existence of things with this word hay, then go back and say them in the negative.
