How to conjugate reflexive verbs in Spanish
1. Reflexive verbs end in -se
-lavarse
-ponerse
-dormirse
2. take the -se off the back for a moment and conjugate the verb just like any other -ar, -er or -ir verb in Spanish
-ar
– lavo
– lavas
– lava
– lavamos
– lavan
-er
– pongo
– pones
– pone
– ponemos
– ponen
-ir
– duermo
– duermes
– duerme
– dormimos
– duermen
3. move the -se to the front of the verb and change the -se to the correct reflexive pronoun that matches the conjugation and the subject.
Reflexive pronouns for all verbs are:
(yo) me
(tú) te
(él, ella, Ud.) se
(nosotros) nos
(ellos, ellas, Uds.) se
-ar
– me lavo*
– te lavas
– se lava
– nos lavamos
– se lavan
-er
– me pongo
– te pones
– se pone
– nos ponemos
– se ponen
-ir
– me duermo
– te duermes
– se duerme
– nos dormimos
– se duermen
*The 2 parts of the verb stay together as one unit. Nothing goes between them. Also, the pronoun MUST match the conjugation.
4. The rules of placement for reflexive verbs are exactly the same as they were for Direct Object Pronouns
ie…if you have 2 verbs together, the pronoun can attach to the infinitive – Make sure the reflexive pronoun matches the subject!
Ejemplo:
(Yo) me lavo las manos antes de comer. – I wash my hands before eating.
Voy a lavarme las manos. – I’m going to wash my hands.
Se ponen los zapatos. – They are putting on their shoes.
Ellos van a ponerse los zapatos. – They are going to put on their shoes.
¿Te duermes? – Are you falling asleep?
¿Vas a dormirte? – Are you going to fall asleep?

acostarse – to go to bed
Usualmente, me acuesto a las 11:00pm.
Esta noche quiero acostarme temprano.
cepillarse – to brush ones hair / teeth
Ella se cepilla los dientes en la mañana y en la noche.
Mi hija no quiere cepillarse el pelo.
afeitarse – to shave
Mi esposo no se afeita. Tiene barba.
El dice, ‘No me gusta afeitarme.’
despertarse – to wake up
Los lunes me despierto a las 4:00am.
Los sábados no necesito despertarme temprano.
ducharse – to take a shower
Mi hija se baña, pero mis hijos prefieren ducharse.
Voy a ducharme.
