El Presente – Parte 5 – 40 Must-Have Verbs!

Hey!
We’re back…back to our present tense. Let’s hit it again and get these into our regular speech!

Remember: There is a verb in every sentence!  It will serve you well to learn these. Stay with me.

We’ll work on these over the next 3 days and again next week. It’ll be pure conversation from there on!

Last week was an intro to regular present tense verbs. (Review Posts: 6/27, 6/28, 6/29)

 

 

This week we begin today with building vocabulary. Verb Vocabulary!

Let’s do this!
Verb Vocabulary!
–  40 must have verbs.
I’ve tried to pick the 40 most frequently used verbs, but out of 100’s, it is a random list of what I consider the best 40 verbs to start with.

 

-ar 

1. bailar – to dance
2. buscar – to look for
3. caminar – to walk
4. cantar – to sing
5. cocinar – to cook
6. comprar – to buy
7. desear – to want
8. escuchar – to listen to
9. estudiar – to study
10. ganar – to win, earn
11. hablar – to talk / speak
12. llegar – to arrive
13. llevar – to carry/wear/take
14. mandar – to send
15. mirar – to look at / to watch
16. nadar – to swim
17. necesitar – to need
18. pagar – to pay
19. preparar – to prepare/fix
20. regresar – to return
21. tocar – to play (a musical instrument, NOT a sport)
22. tomar – to ingest/eat/drink/take
23. trabajar – to work
24. usar – to use
25. viajar – to travel

Ejemplos:

1. all -ar verbs drop the -ar and add: -o, -as, -a, -amos, -áis, -an

 

Yo regreso mañana
regresas el jueves

él/ella/Ud. regresa en 2 días

Nosotros regresamos el sábado por la tarde

Vosotros regresáis el domingo por la mañana

Ellos/ellas/Uds. regresan en agosto

 

 

2. all -er verbs drop the -er and add: -o, -es, -e, -emos, -éis, -en

 

Yo aprendo mucho
aprendes español

él/ella/Ud. aprende los verbos

Nosotros aprendemos las conjugaciones

Vosotros aprendéis mucho vocabulario

Ellos/ellas/Uds. aprenden italiano

 

 

3. all -ir verbs drop the -ir and add: -o, -es, -e, -imos, -ís, -en

 

Yo vivo en Denver
vives en Nueva York

él/ella/Ud. vive en las montañas

Nosotros vivimos en una ciudad grande

Vosotros vivís en una casa

Ellos/ellas/Uds. viven con sus amigos

 

 

 

 

Ejemplos: traducción

Yo regreso mañana -I’m returning tomorrow
regresas el jueves – You are coming back on Thursday

él/ella/Ud. regresa en 2 días – S/he/you is/are returning in 2 days

Nosotros regresamos el sábado por la tarde – We are coming back on Saturday afternoon

Vosotros regresáis el domingo por la mañana – You guys are coming back on Sunday morning

Ellos/ellas/Uds. regresan en agosto – They/You are returning in August

 

 

 

2. all -er verbs drop the -er and add: -o, -es, -e, -emos, -éis, -en

 

Yo aprendo mucho – I’m learning a lot
aprendes español – You’re learning Spanish

él/ella/Ud. aprende los verbos – S/He/ you are learning verbs

Nosotros aprendemos las conjugaciones – We are learning the conjugations

Vosotros aprendéis mucho vocabulario – You all are learning a lot of vocabulary

Ellos/ellas/Uds. aprenden italiano – They/You all are learning Italian

 

 

3. all -ir verbs drop the -ir and add: -o, -es, -e, -imos, -ís, -en

 

Yo vivo en Denver – I live in Denver
vives en Nueva York – You live in New York

él/ella/Ud. vive en las montañas – S/He lives in the mountains

Nosotros vivimos en una ciudad grande – We live in a big city

Vosotros vivís en una casa – You guys live in a house

Ellos/ellas/Uds. viven con sus amigos – They /You guys live with friends

Action steps:
1. If you are new to Spanish and verbs, select just 10 verbs (a few from each group) and memorize them.
2. Practice their endings and write them in your SB365 Journal.
3. If you have had Spanish before, round out your vocabulary by memorizing any new verbs.
4. Come back tomorrow. It’s a very important day!
