Today is Part 3 of our series on Direct Object Pronouns. Yesterday we worked with lo, la, los and las referring to things. Today, it’s all about people!

 

 

1. Notes

a. Direct objects directly receive an action: I’ll call you.  
‘I’ do the action – I call. ‘You’ receive my action

 

b. Direct objects are:

me refers to yo
te refers to

lo, la refers to él, ella or Ud.

nos refers to nosotros

los, las refers to ellos, ellas or Uds.

 

Direct object pronouns in Spanish (DOPs)

 

c. Here are some verbs that are commonly used with DOPs when they refer to people

buscar – to look for
comprender – to understand
conocer – to know
entender – to understand
escuchar – to listen to
esperar – to wait for
invitar – to invite
llamar – to call
ver– to see
visitar – to visit

 

 

 

d. Remember rules of placement from yesterday.
– directly in front of a conjugated verb
– attached to the back of an infinitive

 

 

2. Me / te

a. ¿Me esperas? – Are you waiting for me?
Sí, te espero. – Yes, I’m waiting for you.

 

b. ¿Vas a invitarme? – Are you going to invite me?
Sí, voy a invitarte. – Yes, I’m going to invite you.

 

Contesta estas preguntas: Do you…? understand me?, see me, know me / Are you going to call me?

1. ¿Me entiendes?
2. ¿Me ves?
3. ¿Me conoces?

4. ¿Vas a llamarme?

 

 

3. Nos / los, las

a. ¿Nos esperan? – Are you guys waiting for us?
Sí, los esperamos. – Yes, we’re waiting for you guys.

b. ¿Van a invitarnos? – Are you guys going to invite us?
Sí, vamos a invitarlos. – Yes, we’re going to invite you guys.

 

Contesta estas preguntas: Do you guys…? understand us?, see us, know us? / Are you guys going to wait for us?

1. ¿Nos entienden?
2. ¿Nos ven?
3. ¿Nos conocen?

4. ¿Van a esperarnos?

 

 

 

4. Te / lo, la

a. ¿Lo/la esperas? – Are you waiting for him/her?
Sí, lo/la espero. – Yes, I’m waiting for him/her.

b. ¿Vas a invitarlo/la? – Are you going to invite him/her?
Sí, voy a invitarlo/la. – Yes, I’m going to invite him/her.

 

Contesta estas preguntas: Do you…? understand him/her?, see him, know her? / Are you going to visit him? / see her?

3. ¿La conoces?

5. lo, la / los, las

a. ¿Los/las espera? – Is s/he waiting for them?
No los/las espera. – No, s/he’s not waiting for them.

b. ¿Va a invitarlos/las? – Is s/he going to invite them?
Sí, va a invitarlos/las. – Yes, s/he’s going to invite them.

1. ¿Los/las entiende?
