Hola,

Cada domingo aprendemos algo de un país.

La semana pasada miramos España, hoy, Cuba.

A kind of long time ago (1986 to be exact), my younger brother and I had an exceptional opportunity to spend 2 weeks in East Germany when the wall was still up.
We were allowed to travel to from East Berlin, Potsdam and down into Dresden. We even got to hike in the Swiss Saxony mountains and saw some geologic structures that I’d never seen before (columnar structures) https://www.pinterest.com/nanaco/columnar-joint/

What does all of this have to do with Spanish? Well, when we returned to East Berlin, we went into a restaurant that only diplomats and travelers could enter (the local East Berliners were not permitted in these restaurants). When we walked in the door, the restaurant was dark and empty. On a little table by the entrance there was a plate full of “puros“, Cuban cigars. As we entered the bar and dining area all of the employees were speaking Spanish.

I was not sure where I was for a moment. I was confused by Spanish instead of German. Turns out all of the wait and kitchen staff were Cuban exchange workers.
Being a Communist country, Cubans were free to travel and work in other Communist countries including Russia and Germany. I was surprised and not at all expecting to get to use Spanish in East Berlin.
As the restaurant was empty, we had a great conversation going with the waiters and bartender during our meal and even smoked a “forbidden” puro at the end of the meal. Spanish in East Berlin.
