We have learned the question ¿Cómo se dice? – How do you say? to be proactive building specific vocabulary that you specifically need to know.
For example,
¿Cómo se dice ‘home’ en español? – Se dice ‘hogar, el hogar’.
¿Cóme se dice ‘el fregadero’ en inglés? – Se dice the kitchen sink.
Remember, with ¿Cómo se dice?, you don’t need to have the object in front of you.
With the question ¿Qué es esto?, you have the object in front of you.
¿Qué es esto? es singular, ¿Qué son estos?, es plural
Today we’ll use these questions… Around the House / Alrededor de la casa:
una casa – a house
un hogar – a home
Pasen, pasen. Entren
Ahora estamos en la sala... – Now we are in the livingroom…
En la sala de estar – In the livingroom
¿Qué es esto?
Es el sofá. – It’s the sofa. (Note that ‘sofá’ is masculine)
Es un sillón – It’s an arm chair.
Es una lámpara – It’s a lamp.
Es una mesa – It’s a table.
Es un cuadro – It’s a picture.
En la cocina... – In the ktichen…
el comedor – the dining room
¿Qué es esto?
Es la estufa. – It’s the stove.
Es el horno. – It’s the oven.
Es la nevera. – It’s the fridge.
Es un gabinete. – It’s a cupboard/cabinet.
Es el fregadero. – It’s the sink.
En el dormitorio... – In the bedroom…
¿Qué es esto?
Es la cama. – It’s the bed.
Es una almohada. – It’s a pillow.
Es el armario / el ropero. – It’s the closet.
Es el tocador. – It’s the dresser.
Es el despertador. – It’s the alarm clock.
En el baño... – In the bathroom…
¿Qué es esto?
Es la ducha. – It’s the shower.
Es el lavabo. – It’s the sink.
Es una toalla. – It’s a towel.
Es el espejo. – It’s the mirrow.
Es papel higiénico o papel de bano. – It’s toilet paper.
Action Steps:
1. Get out the sticky notes and label your house. You’ll only need to leave them up for a week before you have them all memorized.
2. Gather up a pile of items or empty your pockets or purse on the table and ask your Spanish-speaking friends, ¿Qué es esto?
3. Write the list of new words – It’s easy to memorize 7-10 words in one sitting!! Poco a poco
