Grammar – Intro to Subjunctive in Spanish

Bienvenidos.
Ayer en el Post aprendimos a conjugar los verbos de -ar en el presente de subjuntivo.
Hoy continuamos a aprender las conjugaciones: -er / -ir
1. To conjugate the subjuntive, -er & -ir verbs use -ar verb endings. Also, the yo form and the él, ella y Ud. form use the same ending.
2. The subjunctive often gets kicked off by ‘que‘ in a dependent phrase/clause. (meaning-it can’t stand alone)
3. Example and endings
-er
comer
el indicativo – el subjuntivo
yo como – que yo coma
tú comes – que tú comas
él
ella come – que él/ella/Ud. coma
Ud.
nosotros comemos – que nosotros comamos
ellos
ellas comen – que ellos/ellas/Uds. coman
Uds.

vivir
el indicativo – el subjuntivo
yo vivo – que yo viva
tú vives – que tú vivas
él
ella vive – que él/ella/Ud. viva
Ud.
nosotros vivimos – que nosotros vivamos
ellos

The new endings for both groups are:
-a
-as
-a
-amos
-an
Práctica: Do the same with these verbs
aprender y escribir
que yo aprenda / que yo escriba
que tú aprendas / que tú escribas
que él/ella/Ud. aprenda / que escriba
que nosotros aprendamos / que escribamos
que ellos/ellas Uds. aprendan / que escriban
4. To start with, let´s use the word ‘ojalá‘ again – I hope
In the subjunctive remember that we are often talking about a hope or a wish and not necessarily a known fact.
*Also, we need to have a change of subject between the first part of the sentence and the one introduced by ‘que’
Ejemplo:
Ojalá que ellos escriban los reportes. – I hope (that) they write the reports.
See how the subject changed from… I hope to …they write. This is a key element that sets off the subjunctive.
Let’s do some more.
Ojalá que Uds. coman en el restaurante.
Ojalá que tú aprendas mucho.
Ojalá que ella no lea el mensaje.
Ojalá que él no reciba las noticias.

Let’s try some sentences with ‘Esperar‘ – to hope
Note the change of subject between the 2 parts
Yo espero que tú…(vender tu casa) – I hope you sell your house.
Tú esperas que yo …(comprender bien) – You hope that I understand well.
Ellos esperan que nosotros…(vivir en Costa Rica algún día) – They hope we live in Costa Rica some day.
Nosotros esperamos que Uds.…(abrir la puerta pronto) – We hope you guys open the door soon.
