Esta semana hemos estado aprendiendo los verbos como gustar y los pronombres de objeto Indirecto. Son muy importantes en las conversaciones cotidianas.
Verbs like gustar have just 2 conjugations in any verb tense.
Use only the 3rd person singular and the 3rd person plural. This is because the verb gets conjugated based on what a person likes or dislikes.
In English we say, ‘I like tea.’, but in Spanish it’s, ‘Tea is pleasing to me. – Me gusta té.
I like carrots. vs. Carrots are pleasing to me. – Me gustan zanahorias.
In English ‘I’ is doing the action so the verb is based on ‘I’.
In Spanish ‘Tea’ or ‘Carrots’ is/are doing the action (it’s the subject of the sentence) so the verb is based on ‘Tea’ or ‘Carrots’.
Since what we like is either singular or plural, these verbs only have 2 forms. Singular and plural.
This is true to all verbs that function like gustar.
Also, since ‘tea’ or ‘carrots’ is/are pleasing to me or to you or to anyone, we use the Indirect Object Pronoun to indicate ‘to’ someone.
Me gusta té – the ‘Me’ translates as ‘to me’ -Tea is pleasing to me.
Le gustan zanahorias. – ‘Le‘ means to him / to her / to you.
S/he likes carrots. – Carrots are pleasing to him/her. (or to you)

Use the prepositional phrase in parenthesis to emphasize or clarify the pronoun.

Sergio: Me parece buena idea. Te va a gustar. ¿Cuándo quieres ir?
